Jenna Ortega and Elle Fanning Share Tears and Laughs Over Bad Auditions, Being Child Stars and Social Media’s ‘Manipulative’ Dark Side

Elle Fanning, 25, and Jenna Ortega, 20, have learned a lot from their roles as Catherine the Great and Wednesday Addams (respectively). Hulu’s “The Great” and Netflix’s “Wednesday” have educated them about their craft as actors, but also about how producing can liberate them from toxic workplace dynamics. These former child stars let each other in on how they’re navigating adulthood and the pressures of social media, a topic that makes Ortega teary.

ELLE FANNING: Are you a good auditioner? I’m terrible. I fainted once. I think I was 12. But I got Pinkberry and Burger King afterwards, so I was like, “This is great!” They make me so nervous.

JENNA ORTEGA: I had really awful experiences with screaming and things like that. The first time I ever had to scream for an audition, it was a three-hour drive, so my mom was saying, “Hey, do you want to practice?” And I told her, “No, I got it.” I went in, did not have it. My voice cracked. She was so frustrated, because she was sacrificing so much for me to be out there. I felt awful. Have you been yelled at by a casting director?

FANNING: No, I’ve never been yelled at.

ORTEGA: I apologize too much.

FANNING: So they yelled at you for saying you’re sorry?

ORTEGA: Yeah, because I just kept cutting off my monologue by going, “Oh, I’m sorry. I’ve messed it up.” Did you go to public school?

FANNING: I was homeschooled up until the fourth grade. And then, when I was about 9 years old, I was like, “Mom, I have no friends.” So I got to go to a private school in L.A. I did not go to college.

ORTEGA: Neither did I. I really wanted to.

FANNING: We gotta talk about “Wednesday.” You are absolute perfection. There is not a single word or physicality that’s out of place. I love the snap.

“I’m Not Just Here to Smile”: Jenna Ortega, Elle Fanning and the THR Comedy Actress Roundtable

Sheryl Lee Ralph, Natasha Lyonne, Ayo Edebiri and Devery Jacobs also join the conversation about fighting stereotypes, digesting gross notes and the prospect of playing Pete Davidson’s girlfriend.

“My God, we are a breath of fresh, fabulous air,” declared Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph as she looked around the table at Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), Elle Fanning (The Great), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Natasha Lyonne (Poker Face) and Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs) — all gathered on a late April morning for THR’s annual Comedy Actress Emmy Roundtable. Over the course of an hour, their conversation ranged from fighting stereotypes and finding agency to dismissing gross notes and having a little fun.

When fans approach you, what do they typically recognize you from and what do they say?

SHERYL LEE RALPH For me, it’s all about Abbott Elementary, and oh my God, it’s just such an outpouring of love. It’s the ones who talk to me in the bathroom, now that’s a problem. In the toilet at the airport, it’s like, “Oh my goodness!” Yeah, “Thank you, thank you. May I continue now?”

ELLE FANNING I had a funny one on a plane. It was a nighttime flight, I was full-on sleeping, and I get a little shake. This woman was like, “I was just wondering if you had any advice for an actor?” I said, “Just keep on moving.”

JENNA ORTEGA Wednesday has a much wider audience than I anticipated, at least agewise, so it’s older people and younger people. But I’ve had a couple of weird plane stories, too, where I’ve woken up to notes or things like that. I got off one yesterday, and at the end, the flight attendant took her hair down out of the bun and it was in two braids and she took her bangs down and she said, “You made me do this.”

AYO EDEBIRI A lot of people who are working at restaurants right now will be like, “Hey, The Bear was really awful to watch. Thanks for making it.” I’m like, “You’re welcome?” A guy also came up to me in Chicago and said, “Hey, I recognize you from the show and I really hated your character. She was really annoying. Great job.” I was like, “Thanks, dawg. Really appreciate it.” Or somebody will be like, “I worked a restaurant job, do you want to hear the seven worst things that happened to me?” There’s a lot of projection — beautiful projection that I’m grateful for, but a lot of projection on The Bear. I also [get recognized from] Abbott. I did an episode, and I was like, “Oh, I love this, people just love this show.”

Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning reveal inner workings of that ‘Great’ tangled marriage

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult could hardly maintain their composure while shooting their final scenes together on “The Great.” For three seasons on the anti-historical Hulu dramedy series, the Emmy-nominated actors, who first worked together in the 2014 sci-fi film “Young Ones,” have gone toe-to-toe as Empress Catherine the Great and Peter III of Russia.

Although they have survived more than most couples — she staged a successful coup against him and nearly stabbed him to death, whereas he slept with and accidentally killed her mother — Catherine and Peter’s deep-seated animosity belies a growing affection that neither is able to fully articulate until just moments before one of them meets an untimely (and icy) end in the latest season. Stop reading now if you don’t want to know those details.

“I think we can both appreciate that it was so special to get to play these characters and be in those scenes together,” Hoult says. “Knowing that it was the last time we’d get to do that was very difficult.”

On a recent video call — Fanning from Los Angeles and Hoult from Calgary — the co-stars discussed the evolution of Catherine and Peter’s relationship and their plans to work together again in the future.

Catherine and Peter have taken the ups and downs of a married couple to the nth degree, but they seem to arrive at a place of reconciliation this season.

Fanning: I think Catherine says a line early on this season, “For us to move forward, we have to leave the past behind.” But the past inevitably always does creep back. The outside influence of the court and the ghost of his father are telling him that being a good father isn’t enough, which is quite sad, and that he needs to have some huge, powerful legacy and have done something like win a war. I think if it wasn’t for those outside forces gnawing at Peter, they probably would be OK. If they were just on a desert island together, they would probably want to kill each other at times — like a “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” situation — but they do always inevitably come back together and love each other in the end.

Hoult: You’ve struck the nail on the head, because that’s what’s fun about this season. It’s this breakdown of, “How much baggage is too much? How can you rebuild trust and love after terrible things have happened?” And I think, ultimately, Catherine and Peter get each other enough where they could [move on], and it’s actually the environment around them that prevents them from finding happiness.

Elle Fanning & Sarah Paulson Set For Mirrah Foulkes’ ‘I Am Sybil’

Elle Fanning (The Great) and Sarah Paulson (Ratched) are attached to star in I Am Sybil, a new film co-written and directed by Mirrah Foulkes (Judy & Punch). It explores the gripping true story behind the best-selling book and cultural-sensation case of Sybil, one of the first mainstream cases of dissociative identity disorder (or multiple personality disorder, as it was then known), which spurred questions in the public consciousness around identity and mental health.

Sybil was a pseudonym given to Shirley Mason in a 1973 work of nonfiction by Flora Rheta Schreiber, which examined the young woman’s treatment for MPD by psychologist Connie Wilbur. The source material the new film will draw on is Debbie Nathan’s 2011 book Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case, one of a number of texts that dispute the facts of Schreiber’s account.

While the producers wouldn’t confirm the roles that Fanning and Paulson will be playing, sources have Fanning as Mason, with Paulson as Wilbur.

This new take on the story of Sybil emerges following two starry TV movie adaptations, both titled Sybil. The first, starring Sally Field and Joanne Woodward, debuted on NBC in 1976 and won four Emmys, while the second starring Tammy Blanchard, Jessica Lange and JoBeth Williams premiered on CBS in 2007.

Foulkes will direct from her script written with Jen Silverman. Producers include Jennifer Todd for Jennifer Todd Pictures, Annapurna and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lindsay Williams for The Gotham Group.

Emmy nominee Fanning stars opposite Nicholas Hoult on Hulu’s The Great, a historical satire that has her playing Catherine the Great, which returned for its third season last month. The actress most recently closed a deal to star opposite Kristen Stewart and Josh O’Connor in Karim Aïnouz’s Rosebushpruning, also signing on to play the love interest of Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan in Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown.

Josh O’Connor & Elle Fanning To Star In ‘Rosebushpruning’

Kristen Stewart, Josh O’Connor and Elle Fanning are to lead The Match Factory and Mubi’s Rosebushpruning from Firebrand director Karim Aïnouz.

The movie is an adaptation of Marco Bellochio’s psychological feature 50 years ago, which was titled Fists in the Pocket. Aïnouz, who won the Cannes 2019 Un Certain Regard with The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão and is behind the Alicia Vikander-starring Firebrand, is directing from a script written by Efthimis Filippou (Dogtooth). Adaptation rights were acquired from Kavac Film and shooting will begin in 2024.

Rosebushpruning is a dark satire of family and social values, centering on a young man suffering from epilepsy who plots the murders of his dysfunctional family.

“Marco Bellocchio’s astonishing debut, Fists in the Pocket, was released over 50 years ago and had a huge impact on Italian cinema and storytelling at the time,” said Aïnouz. “I’m excited to be collaborating with Efthimis Filippou to revisit this iconic work to create a contemporary parable about the death of the traditional patriarchal family — which I hope will be touching and provocative in equal measure.”

Stewart is represented by WME and McKuin/Frankel/Whitehead. O’Connor is represented by CAA, Independent Talent Group, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Fanning is repped by UTA, Echo Lake Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox. [Source]

Elle Fanning Joins Timothée Chalamet In Searchlight Pictures’ ‘A Complete Unknown’

Elle Fanning (The Great) is set to star alongside Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbaro in A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic that two-time Oscar nominee James Mangold is directing for Searchlight Pictures.

The film heading into production in New York this summer watches as a young Dylan (Chalamet) shakes up the music world in 1965, as he pivots to performing with an electric guitar for the first time. Fanning will play the role of Dylan’s early ’60s love interest, university student and artist Sylvie Russo.

Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York) wrote the script, with Mangold handling revisions. Dylan’s longtime manager Jeff Rosen will produce alongside Veritas Entertainment Group’s Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer and Peter Jaysen, Automatik’s Fred Berger, The Picture Company’s Alex Heineman, and Mangold. Exec producers include Dylan, as well as Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Andrew Rona.

Recognized thus far in her career with nominations at the Emmys, Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Gotham Awards and Independent Spirit Awards, Fanning currently leads the historical satire The Great from creator Tony McNamara, which returned for its third season on Hulu on May 12th. The in-demand actress previously led Hulu’s crime drama miniseries The Girl from Plainville and has also previously starred in two Maleficent films for Disney, as well as such titles as Teen Spirit, Mary Shelley, The Beguiled, 20th Century Women, The Neon Demon, Trumbo, We Bought a Zoo, Twixt, Super 8, Somewhere, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Babel.
