Weinstein Co. Finally Puts Transgender Teen Drama ‘Three Generations’ Back on Schedule

The Gaby Dellal-helmed film, which also stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, has sat in limbo since September 2015.

Nearly 18 months after abruptly pulling Three Generations from its release schedule, The Weinstein Co. has put the Elle Fanning-led transgender drama back on the calendar.

TWC will release the Gaby Dellal-helmed film, which also stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, on May 19, where it will open against such wide releases as Alien: Covenant, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and Everything, Everything.

In September 2015, TWC pulled the film, then titled About Ray, from its schedule just days before it was set to open in select theaters. The move raised eyebrows given that the company had aggressively pursued the film and bought it for $6 million at the Cannes market in May 2015.

About Ray was scheduled to begin rolling out Sept. 18, 2015, following its bow at the Toronto Film Festival, but Harvey Weinstein’s company decided to shift course. At the time, TWC sources said the film would be bumped to later that year for an Oscar-qualifying run. But that never materialized, leaving the film in limbo.

About Ray centers on a New York teenager (Fanning) who decides to transition from female to male, and how she copes with the reaction of her mother (Watts) and gay grandmother (Sarandon).

Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf produced alongside Dorothy Berwin and Watts.

CAA and ICM repped the Cannes sale and have been working to get the film its contractually obligated theatrical release over the past year and a half. [Source]

Elle Fanning’s About Ray release date delayed

Elle Fanning’s transgender drama About Ray is being delayed from its scheduled Sept. 18 release date.

No new date has been set for The Weinstein Company project, but it’s expected to be released before the end of this year. Deadline was first to report the news.

About Ray stars Fanning as Ray, a transgender teen who comes out to his family. The film, which also stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, recently had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“I definitely knew it would be a huge challenge to do — I definitely have never done anything like that before. I have a lot of transgender friends who go to my school and have made a transition over the summer,” Fanning told JD Heyman at the PEOPLE, InStyle and Entertainment Weekly’s photo studio in Toronto. “Reading this story and how current it seems. It’s not just about a transgender teen, it’s about family and how everyone is dealing with it. I just love Ray, and love the story.” [Source]

Elle Fanning’s Transgender Friends Helped Her Bring Ray To Life In ‘About Ray’

The highly anticipated drama “About Ray” screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this weekend. The film follows Ray (Elle Fanning) who decides to transition from female to male, while his mother Maggie (Naomi Watts) tries to understand her son’s decision, as well as hunt down his father Craig (Tate Donovan) for legal parental consent.

On Saturday, Fanning and Watts discussed the film with People, sharing some insight into how Fanning prepared for the role. “I had a lot of transgender friends that go to my school, who made the transition over the summer, and they changed their names and used different pronouns…so I was used to that.”

“Reading this story and how current it seems, and it’s not just about a transgender teen. It’s also about a family and how everyone’s dealing with it,” continued Fanning. “I just love Ray and I love his story and really wanted to tell it because he deserves it.”

Watts explained how she spoke with various mothers of transgender kids: “Some of the lines from the film are actually taken from their stories,” which helps add even more authenticity to the film. “When you hear something that says so much and it just connects with truth, it’s so valuable,” she said.

We couldn’t agree more.

“About Ray” opens in theaters Sept. 18. [Source]

‘About Ray’ Trailer: Elle Fanning Plays a Trans Teen

The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for About Ray (formerly Three Generations). Elle Fanning stars as Ray, New York City teenager embarking on the process of transitioning from female to male.

Naomi Watts plays Ray’s mother Maggie, who accepts his decision but nevertheless worries about her child, and Susan Sarandon plays Ray’s grandmother Dolly, who just doesn’t seem to get it (“Why can’t she just be a lesbian?” she asks). Tate Donovan also stars as Ray’s absentee father, who’s reluctant to sign off on Ray’s medical forms. Watch the About Ray trailer after the jump.

‘Three Generations’ Gets Release Date

The Weinstein Co. has given an awards-season release date of September 18 for transgender drama “Three Generations,” starring Naomi Watts, Elle Fanning and Susan Sarandon.

Fanning plays a New York teenager seeking to transition from female to male. Watts portrays her mother and Sarandon is her lesbian grandmother.

Producers are Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf, along with Dorothy Berwin. Big Beach also financed “Three Generations.” [Source]
