Elle Fanning to Serve as Juror at L’Oréal’s Cannes Film Festival Award

The actress, producer and brand ambassador will take over the role from Kate Winslet to award the L’Oréal Paris Lights on Women’s Worth prize to an emerging female filmmaker.

Elle Fanning is set to light up the Croisette, stepping into the role of juror for the L’Oréal Paris Lights on Women’s Worth prize.

“I am honored to preside as juror of the Lights on Women’s Worth Award and to play part in continuing this important initiative,” Fanning said.

Fanning will take over the spot from Kate Winslet, who has served as sole juror since the inception of the award in 2021.

“Such platforms are essential in supporting emerging female talent, giving them the opportunity to showcase their unique skills and work and empowering them to become the artist they want to be. The extraordinary talents of last year’s finalists were truly breathtaking; I can’t wait to watch the films.”

The Lights on Women’s Worth award was created to honor a promising female director from the two short film categories across the Official Selection. This encompasses the Short Film Competition nominees, as well as those of the La Cinef selection of film school submissions.

“For L’Oréal Paris, the Festival de Cannes is another occasion to empower every woman to express their true selves and to overcome barriers. In cinema, the massive underrepresentation of women requires large-scale support, and I am proud that the L’Oréal Paris Lights on Women’s Worth award keeps on bringing about meaningful change. Our commitment to female short-film directors is a first step toward creating lasting change against gender imbalance in the film industry,” said L’Oréal Paris global brand president Delphine Viguier-Hovasse.

‘The Great’ Canceled By Hulu After 3 Seasons

OK, this one hurts. Hulu has canceled fan favorite The Great after three seasons.

The series starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great reinvented the period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796. It depicted an iconic character and her place in history through a unique prism.

The third season dropped May 12 and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage.

It’s unclear what made the streamer decide to cancel the comedy, which garnered positive reviews and seven Emmy nominations since launching in 2020. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in 2022, the same year that Fanning and Hoult earned their first nominations for headlining the popular series. Fanning also received numerous other accolades for her performance as Catherine, including a SAG, a Critics Choice, an Independent Spirit Award and two Golden Globe nominations.

A spokesperson for Hulu declined comment.

The Great also starred Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow. Several key characters were killed off in the third season, which earned the strongest accolades compared to the previous two seasons.

The season 3 finale wasn’t exactly a cliffhanger, as it ends with Catherine showing tremendous growth as a ruler (while sporting a new haircut). She also dances to AC/DC.

Besides McNamara, The Great was also executive produced by Fanning, Hoult, Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding, Thruline’s Ron West and Josh Kesselman. The project is produced by Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television. [Source]

‘The Great’: Hulu Announces Season 3 Premiere Date

The Great is about to make its great return.

The Emmy-winning series will return to Hulu on Friday, May 12. Starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, the third season follows Catherine (Fanning) and Peter (Hoult) as they attempt to make their marriage work after some seemingly insurmountable problems. Peter witnessed his own attempted murder at Catherine’s hands and she also imprisoned all of his friends.

On top of this, Peter is at a loose end playing First Husband to Catherine’s reign, so he busies himself with fathering, hunting and salty culinary ventures. But they’re not enough to keep him contented as visions of his late father (played by Jason Isaacs), get in his head about his failures as Peter the Great’s son. Catherine the Great starts making a name for herself beyond her borders and inspired by a visit from the US ambassador, sets up a conference where peasants, nobles and merchants can all give their input on developing a new Russia. She learns that even the best political leaders sometimes need to make compromises in order to progress.

Fanning announced the show’s return on her Instagram page.

The Great is created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoffand Andrew Spaulding, Thruline’s Ron West and Josh Kesselman.

The project is produced by Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television. [Source]

‘The Great’ Renewed For Season 3 At Hulu

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult are set to return for a third season of Hulu’s The Great following a successful sophomore season currently available to stream in its entirety.

The series, one of the streamer’s top-performing original comedies, has now been renewed for a 10-episode third season.

In Season 2, Catherine (Fanning) finally takes the Russian throne for her own — but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of “liberating” a country that doesn’t want to be. She battled her court, her team, even her own mother in a bid to bring the enlightenment to Russia.

Series co-stars include Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.

The Great—from Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television— is created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Fanning, Hoult, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding, Thruline’s Josh Kesselman and Ron West and Matt Shakman. Barry Levinson’s Making Of ‘The Godfather’ Feature Lands Elle Fanning As Ali MacGraw

Golden Globe nominated actress Elle Fanning has joined the cast of Barry Levinson’s film about the making of Paramount’s classic film, The Godfather.

Fanning will play actress Ali MacGraw, who was married to Paramount’s head of production Robert Evans.

Just after winning the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer, MacGraw starred in Paramount’s blockbuster hit Love Story, for which she was nominated for an Oscar and won the Golden Globe for Best Actress. She would later meet Steve McQueen on the set of The Getaway and the two would fall in love and eventually marry. Deadline’s Peter Bart was the VP of Production during the Evans’ regime at Paramount when The Godfather was being made.

The feature is based on The Blacklist screenplay by Andrew Farotte that has been re-developed with Levinson, who will direct. Fanning joins previously announced actors Oscar Isaac (Francis Coppola), Jake Gyllenhaal (Bob Evans) and Elisabeth Moss (Eleanor Coppola). Production begins this autumn.

“Elle is one of the most exciting and versatile actresses out there,” said Levinson in a statement. “I am beyond thrilled that she has joined the terrific cast of “Francis & The Godfather” and will bring her unique talent to the film.”

This year Elle was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Independent Spirit Award for her performance in The Great. She is currently in production on season 2 of the Hulu/MRC series in which she also serves as EP. She recently starred in Sally Potter’s The Roads Not Taken and Netflix’s All The Bright Places, the latter of which she also produced. She will next star in and executive produce the limited series The Girl from Plainville for Hulu. Continue reading  »
