Plenty of young rising stars are represented in the nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards. Rufus Norris’ “Broken”, starring Cillian Murphy and Tim Roth, led nominations with nine, including for Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Debut Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Ben Wheatley’s “Sightseers” and Peter Strickland’s “Berberian Sound Studio” followed with seven nominations each.
In our favorite category at these awards, five relative unknowns are battling it out for the title of Most Promising Newcomer. This year’s nominees are “Spike Island” star Elliot Tittensor, “Broken” star Eloise Laurence, “My Brother the Devil” star James Floyd, “The Angel’s Share” star Paul Brannigan and “Dream of a Life” star Zawe Ashton.
In other acting categories, both “Ginger and Rosa” stars are nominated, with Elle Fanning in Best Actress facing off against Andrea Riseborough for “Shadow Dancer”, Alice Lowe for “Sightseers”, Judi Dench for “The Best Exotic Madrigold Hotel” and Meryl Streep for “The Iron Lady.” Meanwhile, Alice Englert will be gunning for Best Supporting Actress against a bevy of veteran British actresses: Maggie Smith for “The Best Exotic Madrigold Hotel”, Eileen Davies for “Sightseers”, Olivia Coleman for “Hyde Park on Hudson” and Vanessa Redgrave for “Song for Marion.”
The full list of nominations (which also includes “Anna Karenina” star Domhall Gleeson for Best Supporting Actor in “Shadow Dancer”, among others) can be viewed below (thanks to THR). [Source]
